David Jonathan Rees Lean was born in Fishguard in May 1952. During his youth he was actively involved in both the parishes of Fishguard and Goodwick, having moved to Goodwick in 1966. Having felt his calling to the priesthood from a young age he was accepted for ministerial training and began his studies at Burgess Hall Lampeter in 1971. After completing his studies there in 1974 he was still too young to be ordained and was sent by Bishop Eric Roberts to the College of the Resurrection Mirfield. He was ordained to the diaconate in July 1975 and was priested the following year, serving his title at St Maryís Tenby. During his six year curacy he was privileged to work under two rectors; the late Canon Vernon Johns and Rt Revd Dewi Bridges, latterly Bishop of Swansea and Brecon. In 1981 he moved to be Vicar of Llanrhian, Llanhywel, and Llanrheithan (which now comprises part of the Rectorial Benefice of Dewisland). In 1988 Archbishop George Noakes invited him to be Vicar of St Martinís Haverfordwest and of St Ishmaelís Lambston. In 2000 he was appointed Canon Residentiary of St Davids Cathedral and in 2001 Team Vicar of the newly created Rectorial Benefice of Dewisland, with responsibility for St Davids parish.  Jonathan Lean has a keen musical interest, having been involved with local choirs for many years; he sings tenor in the Cathedral Choir and with the John S.
