Library exhibitions

Part of the Library Collection is always on public display whenever the Cathedral is open. These are in the Cathedral Treasury. There are also often exhibitions on display in the Library itself. Please see below for information on past exhibitions.


October 2019 - Constituciones Provinciales Ecclesie Anglicane by Bishop William Lyndwode c.1505

One of oldest books in the St Davids Cathedral Library. Parts of this were first written in 1433. William Lyndwode LL.D. was Keeper of the Privy Seal 1432-1443 and Bishop of St Davids 1442-1447.

William Lyndwode's iconic Constituciones Provinciales Ecclesie Anglicane examined the role of church, government, the Pope and of the law as it applied in the places he worked in England and Wales. This copy was published in Paris, about 1505. The issues raised in this book are still very live today. This was emphasised by Prof. Norman Doe in his lecture in the Cathedral during UK Libraries Week October 2019, the full text of which is provided below:


 


March 2018 - Bishop Joanna and the Suffragettes

On International Women's Day, 8th March, 2018 The Rt Rev'd Joanna Penberthy opened an Exhibition which featured the Cathedral Visitors Book of July 1908. It includes signatures of Emmeline Pankhurst, Annie Kenney, Emmeline Pethick Lawrence and Mary Blathwayt who visited St Davids Cathedral while campaigning for the suffragette cause in a Pembrokeshire by-election.

October 2017 - Lord Nelson’s Bible and Prayer Book

The Cathedral Library were pleased to assist St Katherine's Church Milford Haven to conserve the Bible and Prayer Book belonging to Horatio Lord Nelson that was given to their church by his brother Earl Nelson after the Admiral's death in HMS Victory. On return from the conservators, the Bible and Prayer Book were put on display in the Cathedral Treasury.
