Chris Crooks

Chris joined the staff as Dean’s Verger (Head Verger) in May 2022, having previously served as Vesturer (Head Verger) at Canterbury Cathedral. He had earlier served as Head Verger of Salisbury and Portsmouth cathedrals, and as a verger at Wells Cathedral, having begun his ministry as the Assistant Verger in his home diocese at Llandaff Cathedral. Chris is a graduate of Canterbury Christ Church University, with a Masters Degree in history, is honoured to be a Fellow of the Guild of Vergers, and a member of the Deans Vergers Conference.

Chris is responsible for the practical arrangements for the busy schedule of daily worship and special services for the church’s calendar, and the services and events organised for local and national bodies, as well as providing a warm welcome for the many pilgrims and visitors. He also provides assistance for concerts, events, graduation ceremonies, exhibitions and the general housekeeping of the cathedral buildings, in which he is ably assisted by a small team of Vergers, Caretakers and Welcomers, volunteers Stewards and Servers.   He and his fellow vergers may be found behind the scenes making all the necessary preparations or spotted taking an active role in the worship, either ceremonially by leading the processions with their ‘virge’ or undertaking other roles within the liturgy.
